It’s that time of year again. Time to whip out the list of resolutions you made just 366 days ago (yes, it was Leap Year) and see how many of them you met – or if you met any of them at all (or if you lost the list but vaguely remember that reducing clutter and being more organized was on there…)
The wonderful thing about the human spirit, though, is that no matter how many times in the past we pledged to ourselves that this was the year, we were going to be reasonable in our expectations and meet them, we can forgive ourselves for being, well, human. That’s the magic of the first day of the new year.
It’s a new beginning once again. Time to reset our expectations.
Where did this weird tradition of setting ourselves up with new hopes come from? It dates back millennia. Christian Knights, Babylonians, and Romans all gave pledges and promises to their gods on the first of each year. Paying debts, asking forgiveness for shortcomings, and promising to right wrongs were popular back then. In its modern reincarnation, self-improvement and greater responsibility for an aspect of our lives are common, and almost half of the population makes some kind of resolutions to change.
My hopes for 2013 are pretty simple. For the new year, I pledge to:
- Continue writing Flynn’s Crossing stories that offer you, my readers, escapism and enjoyment.
- Add new twists here on the website, such as recipes from Roxy’s, gardening tips from Tess, and pictures from our little corner of California.
- Stretch as a writer to reach even broader audiences, including adding a new suspense series to my resume.
- Meet as many of my readers as possible, either at book signings, through the upcoming publicity campaign, via Facebook discussions, or here on my website.
